November 12th, 2011 - Todays Garden Center When Behnke Nurseries opened in 1930 in Beltsville, Md., it initially focused on field-grown roses, but developed into a full-service garden center over the years. Today, Behnke’s has two garden centers just outside Washington, D.C. “Two years ago, we decided to sell our production nursery to focus on retailing and landscaping. We are placing greater emphasis on store ambiance and display and positioning ourselves as gardening experts,” says Behnke’s president Alfred Millard.

their gardeners in the Fair! Each vegetable contest entry form has a
field to enter the name of the community garden where the entry was

August 11th, 2011 - Potomac Almanac Alex Dencker of the River Road Behnke’s Nursery suggested, "Super-duper, tough, dark green leafed, evergreen such as Cherry Laurel, or, anything that’s spruce. A Privet Hedge is good, but not near the house. It grows so fast your house will disappear," he laughingly advised. Boxwood, of course, is the number one preference. Deer will not eat it. "They love holly, unless it is the Dragon Lady Holly that is very prickly," he said.

April 28th 2011 - The Baltimore Sun Scales and Tales, Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: The Maryland Department of Natural Resources will be on hand with birds and reptiles exhibited in an informative and interactive manner. Naturalists will be on hand to answer questions, and there will be children’s activities.

March 28th 2011 - The Baltimore Sun I was the guest of owner Stephanie Fleming at Behnke's Nursery in Beltsville, Md., this weekend -- giving my talk on "Gardening on the Internet" during their spring open house -- and she was kind enough to give me a history lesson of the family-owned garden center.

Four Laurel organizations -- Laurel Boys and Girls Club, Laurel Advocacy and Referral Services, Reality Treatment Centers and Phelps Senior Center -- have joined forces to tend a new vegetable and flower garden along the Eighth Street side of the Phelps Center.

July 5th 2009: Laurel Leader Phelps Center garden kicks off state program. The Laurel garden is a partnership between MDOA, the Laurel Boys and Girls Club and Behnke Nurseries, and is the first of numerous gardens that will be planted statewide as part of the project.
